ALC was founded in February 2010 by Steven Udvar-Házy , the founder and former managing director of the largest aircraft lessor International Lease Finance Corporation . Udvar-Házy left ILFC in 2009 due to disputes with its parent company, American International Group .

The company is known for its sometimes enormous quantities that are ordered from manufacturers such as Airbus or Boeing. For example, 136 aircraft were ordered during the 2010 Farnborough International Airshow , valued at $ 10 billion, making ALC the largest buyer at the airshow. ALC was again the largest buyer at the Farnborough Airshow 2014, with 25 Airbus A330-900neo , 60 Airbus A321neo , 6 Boeing 777-300s , 20 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and 7 ATR 72-600s being ordered .
