Steven F. Udvar-Házy

Steven Ferencz Udvar-Házy (* 1946 in Budapest ) is the founder and CEO of the International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC).

Life

Steven F. Udvar-Házy was born in Budapest in 1946 and fled to the USA via Sweden after the Hungarian uprising in 1956 . He graduated from the University of California and graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Relations.

In 1966, Udvar-Házy founded Airlines Systems Research Consultants, a consultancy for airlines. In 1973 he founded the Interlease Group Inc. together with Leslie and Louis Gonda , which went public in 1983. In 1990 the company was sold to the American International Group and is now called ILFC.

Udvar-Házy sits on the board of SkyWest Airlines as well as several foundations and institutions. In 1990 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Dixie State College of Utah . In February 2010, he left the ILFC and founded Air Lease Corporation (ALC), another aircraft leasing company . He is listed as a billionaire by Forbes Magazine in 2018.

He is best known to the American public for a donation of 65 million US dollars to the Smithsonian Institution to expand the National Air and Space Museum . At this point in time, in 1999, this was the largest single donation to the said institute. In his honor, the extension building of the museum was renamed the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center on December 15, 2003 .

Steven F. Udvar-Házy has been friends with John Leahy , Chief Operating Officer (COO) Customer Service at Airbus SAS, since he was a student . This was critical to Airbus' success in the US.

Udvar-Házy has been married since 1980 and has four children.
