Career

Leahy is of Irish ancestry , lives in Ireland and is an avid sailor . He holds an MBA from Syracuse University with a focus in both finance and transportation management and a double BA in communication and philosophy from Jesuit- founded Fordham University . As a flight instructor with more than 3,700 flight hours, he also has a commercial pilot license .

After completing his academic training, John Leahy worked in the marketing department at Piper Aircraft for seven years before joining Airbus North America and in 1988 first head of sales and later president of Airbus North America. Leahy was responsible at Airbus for penetrating the important but strategically difficult North American market and contributed significantly to pushing the competing aircraft manufacturer Boeing from its position as the undisputed number one in the global market. Leahy has been friends with Steven F. Udvar-Házy , the founder of one of Airbus' largest customers, the aircraft leasing company ILFC , since he was a student . This was one of the decisive factors for Airbus' success in the USA. He reached a low point in 2006 when he had to admit to dozen of airlines that the Airbus A380 would be years late. Airbus sold a total of 16,000 aircraft under his responsibility, generating a billion dollar turnover.
