Helmut Menzel (born June 26, 1935 ) is a former German soccer player . The defensive player played 16 league games for Preußen Münster in the debut season of the Bundesliga , 1963/64 .

Career

Menzel already played in his youth for Preußen Münster and later in their amateur team. For the 1961/62 season he was accepted into the upper division squad, but did not come to any league use in the course of the round. In the 1962/63 season, the last of the old first-class league, he played a league game for Münster . He made his debut on November 3, 1962 in a 2-0 home win against Wuppertaler SV in the league. Together with Heinz-Rüdiger Voss he formed the defender couple and regular defender Helmut Tybussek helped out in the runner row. The following year, in the first season of the Bundesliga , he made 16 appearances in the league and one game in the DFB-Pokal . He played his first game in the Bundesliga on November 23, 1963 in a 2-2 home draw against FC Schalke 04. In several of his 16 Bundesliga appearances, he was officially listed as a striker, but was actually in defense. In the World Cup system used at the time , if a team with a reinforced defense ran up, a player from the five-man attack was pulled back for the "double stopper system".

After Münster was relegated, he completed nine games in the Regionalliga West in the following season . According to the literature, it is controversial whether he was actually considered in four other regional league games in the 1968/69 season. In Nöllenheidt's regional league book , a second player named Wenzel (without first name) with four appearances in 1968/69 is noted alongside Helmut Menzel. In contrast, Karn and Rehberg are performing Helmut Menzel with four other games this season. From the line-ups at Nuttelmann for the 1968/69 season in the Regionalliga West, however, one can see that, for example, on May 11, 1969, the 34th round matchday, a goalkeeper Menzel ran up in a 5-1 away defeat by Münster at Bonner SC . Since there was also a goalkeeper substitution between regular goalkeeper Horst Bertram and a substitute goalkeeper Menzel in the games against Eintracht Duisburg (January 26, 1969) and Eintracht Gelsenkirchen (May 4, 1969) , there are many arguments against the appearance of long-time defender Helmut Menzel. In the special season issue 1968/69 of the Sport-Illustrierte from August 5, 1968 from Munich, no player named Menzel is listed on page 51 of the Prussian Munster player lineup.

In March 1977, Menzel replaced his former teammate at Preußen Münster Falk Dörr as coach of ASC Schöppingen . With Schöppingen he became champion of the Landesliga Westfalen. In 1978 he was replaced by Martin Rattka.
