Season overview

Selection of the Bundesliga clubs

The newly founded Bundesliga replaced the top leagues as the only top national division . The championship was played in a double round with 16 teams. The North German champions Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen and Eintracht Braunschweig were admitted to the Bundesliga from the Oberliga Nord . Five clubs came from the Oberliga West : the reigning German champions Borussia Dortmund, the German runner-up and West German champions 1. FC Cologne, Meidericher SV, Preußen Münster and Schalke 04. Five clubs also came from the Oberliga Süd : the South German champions 1860 Munich, 1. FC Nürnberg, Eintracht Frankfurt, Karlsruher SC and VfB Stuttgart. There were also the Southwest German champions 1. FC Kaiserslautern and 1. FC Saarbrücken from the Oberliga Südwest . Berlin was represented by Hertha BSC, the champion of the Berlin City League .

The first game day was played on August 24, 1963. 1. FC Köln dominated the season, had been at the top of the table without interruption since the fifth match day and in the end had six points ahead of second-placed Meidericher SV. Preußen Münster and 1. FC Saarbrücken were relegated to the regional league.

Since it was the first Bundesliga season, there were a number of premieres: Friedhelm "Timo" Konietzka from Borussia Dortmund scored the first goal in history after 58 seconds at Werder Bremen (final score 3: 2 for Werder), and Helmut received the first dismissal Rahn vom Meidericher SV on the fourth matchday against Hertha (final score 1: 3 for Berlin). Jürgen Neumann from 1. FC Kaiserslautern scored the first penalty goal in history on matchday one in Frankfurt (the equalizer to make it 1-1 came just two minutes later, also with a penalty). Willi Schulz from Schalke 04 scored the first own goal a week later in a 3-2 win in Kaiserslautern. In addition, there was a Bundesliga record on the tenth match day when three own goals were scored within 13 minutes of the game between 1. FC Kaiserslautern and VfB Stuttgart (1: 3). It was not until the 2009/10 season that this record was set for the game between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hannover 96 (5-3).
