career

Gelsenkirchen and Essen, until 1962

Hornig was born in Gelsenkirchen and at Eintracht there he also began to play football. After his youth he played with Eintracht in the 2nd League West until 1957 . Under former national player Karl Hohmann as coach Hornig made his debut in the 1956/57 season at the side of teammates such as Hans Nowak and Gerhard Pastoors in the 2nd division. National coach Sepp Herberger noticed the fast and tricky left winger early on. As early as 1957, at the age of 19, he appointed him to the German national football team for amateurs . He made his debut on May 15 in Glasgow against Scotland and scored the goal for a 1-1 draw for captain Herbert Schäfer's team . Hornig was left and Matthias Mauritz right winger of the DFB amateurs. Ten days later, he also stormed in the U23 junior team on May 26 in a 1-1 draw against Czechoslovakia on the left wing. He then accepted the offer from Schalke 04, but according to the DFB statutes at the time, as an amateur national player, he had to serve a twelve-month ban. Exactly in 1958 "Royal Blue" was German champion and the wing talent could not prevail against the long-time national striker Bernhard Klodt in 1958/59 and only made two appearances in the football league west . He made his debut in the league on August 24, 1958 at the game at VfL Bochum, on November 30, 1958, he was used again at the home game against Meidericher SV. After these two lost years - at the end of the round in 1958/59 he played for the third time in the amateur national team in an international match against England (2-0), with center forward Erwin Stein scoring both goals - Hornig tried a fresh start at Rot-Weiss Essen in the Oberliga West.

He was also part of the team of coach Willi Multhaup in 1959/60 - Helmut Rahn had joined 1. FC Köln - immediately joined the circle of regular players alongside the experienced Fritz Herkenrath , Willi Vordenbäum and Heinz Wewers . He completed 28 games for the Bergeborbecker when he reached fourth place in the Oberliga West and scored twelve goals. He experienced a personal triumph on the fifth match day, September 20, 1959, when he scored the winning goal against his ex-club Schalke 04 in the 87th minute of the home game in front of 35,000 spectators in the stadium on Hafenstrasse against his ex-club Schalke 04. In his second year in Essen, 1960/61, RWE surprisingly rose to the 2nd League West, where it took fifth place in 1961/62 ; Hornig scored ten goals in 27 league games alongside other players such as Werner Kik , Otto Rehhagel and Herbert Weinberg . Then he broke his tent in Essen and moved to the cathedral city, where he accepted an offer from 1. FC Cologne .

Success in Cologne, 1962 to 1970

The wing racer celebrated great success with Cologne and also improved its personal performance. In the first season 1962/63 he celebrated after 21 missions and four hits with coach Zlatko Čajkovski and teammates Hans Schäfer and Karl-Heinz Schnellinger the championship in the Oberliga West and moved into the finals and the final of the German championship. On June 29, 1963, the “billy goats” had to do without striker Christian Müller (he had scored nine goals in six finals) and lost to their West German rivals Borussia Dortmund with 1: 3 goals. After a total of 80 games with 23 goals, the chapter of the West German Football League was over in 1963, and the newly installed Bundesliga started for the 1963/64 series . During this season Hornig was also used in the games in the European Cup on September 5, 1962 in Dundee and on September 19, 1962 in Cologne against FC Dundee . While the first game was lost 8-1, 1. FC Köln won the second leg 4-0, but were eliminated.

With the new trainer Georg Knöpfle and the two young talents Wolfgang Overath and Wolfgang Weber , 1. FC Köln prevailed in the debut season of the Bundesliga 1963/64 . With a lead of six points and a goal difference of 78:40, the Cologne team could not be stopped by the following places Meidericher SV and Eintracht Frankfurt. The team of President Franz Kremer became the first champions of the Bundesliga and Heinz Hornig had his share in 24 games with seven goals. In 1964/65 it was not enough to defend the title. Cologne finished second behind SV Werder Bremen, Hornig had played in 25 games and scored six goals. But the games in the European Champions' Cup in the quarter-finals against English champions Liverpool FC are particularly memorable . In the second leg at Anfield and in the playoff on March 24, 1965 in Rotterdam, which was decided by the " coin tossing of Rotterdam " in favor of Liverpool, the 1.68 m tall lightweight was used on the left wing. He mainly dealt with full-back Chris Lawler . With national coach Helmut Schön he made his debut in the national team at the international match in Hamburg against Italy on March 13 and formed the left wing with Friedhelm Konietzka . In 1966, the football World Cup in England, he finished fifth in the Bundesliga with Cologne. Borussia Dortmund was runner-up in the league behind 1860 Munich and was the first German team to beat Liverpool on May 5, 1966 in Glasgow - BVB had in the semi-finals Defending champion West Ham United eliminated - record a success in the European Cup. With Sigfried Held as well as left winger and striker Lothar Emmerich , two attackers played their way to the top. Emmerich and Held took the left attacking places in the German team at the 1966 World Cup and Hornig, who was quick and tricky, but also dominated the combination game, did not get a chance during the tournament. The penultimate international match before England on June 1, 1966 in Ludwigshafen against Romania was Heinz Hornig's last game in the national team. Jürgen Grabowski , Lothar Ulsaß , Uwe Seeler , Wolfgang Overath and Hornig formed the German attack .

Together with the players involved in the runner-up in the 1966 World Cup, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf on July 30, 1966.

In the 1967/68 series , his playing skills helped 1. FC Köln win the DFB Cup . In the 22nd minute of the game he brought the team of coach Multhaup 1-0 against VfL Bochum in the final on June 9, 1968 . Cologne won with 4-1 goals. In the European competition of the cup winners Hornig was in 1968/69 in the successes against Girondins Bordeaux, ADO Den Haag and Randers Freja and failed with Cologne only in the semi-finals by a 1: 4 defeat in the second leg against FC Barcelona , as Josep Fusté in the second half with three goals decided the game for the Catalans. In the 1969/70 series, the veteran completed another 20 Bundesliga games for FC and scored three goals. After a total of 176 Bundesliga games with 33 goals, he said goodbye to Cologne in 1970 and moved to Belgium for RDC Molenbeek , where he was active until 1973.
