Tove Skutnabb-Kangas (born July 6, 1940 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish linguist and educator .

Life

After her training in Helsinki she worked for a short time at the teachers' college. From 1967 to 1968 she went to the USA , where she got a job in the Nordic Language Department at Harvard . She then worked briefly as a teacher in Helsinki. Since 1970 she has been working as a scientist at universities in Finland and Denmark . In 1976 she obtained her first doctorate; The topic of her doctorate is bilingualism . From 1995 to 2000 she taught at the Danish University of Roskilde , where she was a visiting researcher from 1979 to 2007. She has since retired.

The main theme of her work is research into the conditions of bilingualism. In the early 1980s, she played a key role in developing the concept of linguisticism , which she uses to grasp discrimination against minority languages. She criticizes both the neglect of children with a foreign mother tongue (for example Turkish children in Germany ) and the devaluation of bilingualism .
