Karl Hohmann (born June 18, 1908 in Benrath , today in Düsseldorf, † March 31, 1974 Düsseldorf ) was a German football player and coach .

Player career

Hohmann began playing football at VfL Benrath at the age of eight and moved up to the first team for the 1929/30 season - outgrown the youth. In the championships held by the West German Game Association , he played point games in the Berg-Mark district until the end of the 1932/33 season. At the end of his inaugural season in the senior division, he won his first regional title with the district championship. 1932/33 emerged as the winner of Group A , he and his team lost the final of the district championship against Fortuna Düsseldorf , the winner of Group B, 3: 4 overall after a round trip. With the 3-1 win on April 30, 1933 over Schwarz-Weiß Essen , however, he won the West German Cup, just like on April 24, 1932 in the 3-2 win over the Rheydter Spielverein .

From 1933 to 1937 he played in the Gauliga Niederrhein , in one of initially 16, later increased to 23 Gauligen at the time of National Socialism as a uniform top division in the German Empire . From the premiere and the following season, he and his team emerged as Gaumeister and consequently took part in the respective finals for the German championship. For VfL Benrath he played 15 finals in which he scored nine goals; Furthermore, he was used in nine games for the Tschammerpokal , in which he scored ten goals.

From 1937 to 1939 he played for FK Pirmasens in the Gauliga Südwest , with which he was relegated to the district league after his second season .

National team

For the senior national team , he played 26 international matches in which he scored 20 goals. His first came on his debut as a national player on September 7, 1930 in Copenhagen in the 3-6 defeat against the national team of Denmark with the goal to 3-5 in the 68th minute.

He took part with the team in the 1934 World Cup in Italy and finished the tournament in third place. Since he was injured in the 2-1 victory in the semi-finals against the Swedish national team - he scored both goals - from the clash with the Swedish goalkeeper Anders Rydberg , he could not be used in the game for third place.

He also took part with the national team in the 1936 Olympic football tournament in Berlin and on August 4, he played the 9-0 round of 16 against the national team of Luxembourg . With the surprising 2-0 defeat against the national team of Norway , he and his team were eliminated from the tournament in the quarter-finals .

He crowned his last international match for the DFB on June 25, 1937 in Riga in a 3-1 victory over the national team of Latvia with the goal of 1-0 in the tenth minute.

Coaching career

His first coaching position was from 1947 to 1949 with the Wuppertal district club TSG Vohwinkel 80 in the Oberliga West . In June 1949, he succeeded Raymond Schwab as coach of Rot-Weiss Essen and led the club to victory in the cup on May 1, 1953 . In the first official DFB Cup final , his team defeated, among others, Fritz Herkenrath , Helmut Rahn , Franz Islacker and Bernhard Termath in the Düsseldorf Rheinstadion Alemannia Aachen with 2-1. At the end of the 1953/54 season he ended his job in Essen and was replaced by Fritz Szepan . From 1955 to 1958 he coached the second division Rheydter Spielverein . Due to a serious illness, he stopped working as a trainer in 1962.
