↓ District Leagues

The Gauliga Niederrhein was one of initially 16 Gauligen , which were introduced as the top division in Germany after the National Socialist seizure of power in 1933 instead of the district leagues.

history

The Gau classification 1933,
No. 10 = Lower Rhine

In the course of the conformity with the National Socialists in 1933, all previous football associations were dissolved. The game was now organized in 16 football districts and a single-track Gauliga was set up as the top division. The 16 Gauliga champions were qualified for the final round of the German championship . The Gauliga Niederrhein consisted of clubs from the former district leagues Niederrhein and Berg-Mark , as well as regional leagues from the Ruhr and Rhine districts of the West German game association .

The Gauliga Niederrhein was played on a single track during its existence. At the beginning, twelve teams were represented in this, but the number of participants decreased by one club per season, so that ten participants took part at the beginning of the 1935/36 season. The first placed was Gaumeister and qualified for the German soccer championship, the last two teams were relegated. Unlike many other Gauligen during the Second World War , the Gauliga Niederrhein was not split up due to its small regional extent. The number of participants also remained constant with ten teams until the Gauliga was broken off in the 1944/45 season .

The Gaumeister from Niederrhein were able to celebrate some successes at the German soccer championship, even though it was not enough to win a championship. The VfL Benrath achieved in the German football championship 1934/35 the semifinals. Just one season later, Fortuna Düsseldorf made it into the final of the German soccer championship, in which the Düsseldorf team lost 1: 2 after extra time to 1. FC Nürnberg . 1937/38 Düsseldorf was third in the German soccer championship.
