The Gauliga Sachsen was one of 16 top football leagues that were founded in Germany after the Nazi takeover in 1933. In it the Saxon participant in the final round of the German championship was determined.
history
The Gauliga Sachsen started its opening season in 1933 with eleven teams, but played consistently with ten clubs until 1939. In the 1939/40 season, the league was briefly increased to two seasons. In the following season the Gauliga was contested on a single track again, the number of participants fluctuating between ten and twelve until 1944.
At the sporting level, the league was clearly determined by the Dresdner SC during its existence , which won a total of six championships. In the associated participation in the German championships, the Saxon representative won the Victoria twice in the seasons 1942/43 and 1943/44 . Rival VfB Leipzig could no longer build on earlier successes in the Gaume Championships and remained untitled until 1944. The dominance of the DSC was only interrupted by the police SV Chemnitz , BC Hartha and the Planitzer SC .
In the 1944/45 season, the Saxon Gauliga was only played regionally. The league was divided into the groups Dresden, Leipzig, Chemnitz and Westsachsen-Zwickau. However, the game came to a standstill after a few game days due to the chaos of the war.
The substructure of the Gauliga Sachsen was formed by the four second-rate district classes Chemnitz , Dresden , Leipzig and Zwickau , the winners of which played the two promoted players to the Gauliga in a promotion round.
