The Gauliga Westmark (1941 to 1942: division class Westmark ) was one of the top divisions in German football during the Nazi era . It was set up in 1941 as part of the restructuring of the Reichsgaue as one of the successors to the Southwest division class .
history
In 1933 the Gauliga Südwest was one of the highest divisions in the 16 newly established sports districts in the “Third Reich”. In each of them, one of the participants in the final round of the German championship was played. After the war began, some of the leagues that stretched over a large area were dissolved and the teams were redistributed. This also included the Gauliga Südwest in 1941, which had been held in two seasons since 1939. The Gauliga Westmark was created from the Saarpfalz squadron and clubs from the conquered Lorraine , while the teams in the Mainhessen squadron were divided into the Gauliga Hessen-Nassau with part of the Gauliga Hessen , which had also been dissolved .
When the division class was founded in 1941, ten clubs took part, but FK Pirmasens withdrew its team before the end of the round, and from 1942 onwards ten teams took part again. While 1. FC Kaiserslautern was the first Westmark champion to be eliminated in the subsequent final round of the German championship in the group phase, FV Saarbrücken reached the final of the German championship the following year , but failed in Berlin at Dresdner SC (0: 3) . In the following and final season, the club reached the finals again as part of a war syndicate, but lost its quarter-final against 1. FC Nürnberg . With FV Metz , TSG Saargemünd and TSG Merlenbach , three clubs from occupied Lorraine were also represented in the Gauliga Westmark.
