German championship 1940/41

The 35th German championship season 1941 / 42 , the third war championship season, returned to the championship finals back to knockout system back.

The return to the knockout system was due to the increasingly noticeable effects of the war ; This particularly affected the fuel and transport situation, which made it increasingly difficult for clubs to travel to away games. Therefore, from February 1942, the Reichssportführung forbade away trips over 50 km. However, the championship games were excluded, but with the return to the knockout system, the number of long trips should be reduced.

Another reason was the expansion of the sports areas to 25, which was due on the one hand to the connection of further areas to the German Reich, but on the other hand to the traffic-related division of sports areas. The new sports areas Westmark and Moselland were created in the west . The Westmark sports area comprised the connected Lorraine as well as the Saarland and Palatinate areas , which were separated from the Southwest sports area, while Luxembourg and the Moselle region, which was separated from the Middle Rhine sports area, were incorporated into the Saarland sports area. The two reduced sports areas Southwest and Middle Rhine have now been renamed Hessen-Nassau and Cologne-Aachen . For better differentiation, the former sports area Hessen was renamed Kurhessen . The travel problem had the consequence that the sports area Silesia was divided into the areas Lower Silesia and Upper Silesia .

The consequences of the war also had an increasingly negative impact in other respects. Fewer and fewer players were available to the clubs because they were called up for military service. However, initially only the lower classes were particularly affected, where gaming operations collapsed in many places, especially at district level.

In the German championship there was the third Gelsenkirchen - Vienna duel this season . Stood by the FC Schalke 04 this year, the team of First Vienna FC 1894 over which the final also dominated, but their clear superiority could not translate into goals. In the end, FC Schalke 04 were very happy to leave the field as winners with 2-0 and win their sixth German championship title in their 9th final. The Schalke team drew level with the previous record holder 1. FC Nürnberg .

Match report
While Schalke could compete with the best line-up, the Viennese had to do without three regular players. Despite their handicap, Vienna showed little respect for the favorite in the early stages and pushed dangerously forward with fast wing play. But in the 14th minute, the Knappen used their first successful push through Kalwitzki to take the lead. Then Schalke's goalkeeper Flotho had to fend off several shots on goal from Vienna. Although Vienna was close to equalizing, Szepan was able to score the 2-0 for Gelsenkirchner three minutes before half-time after a previous dream combination. In the second half of the game, the Viennese players stormed steadily towards Schalker Tor. However, Schalke relied on his safe defense and thus brought the 2-0 lead over time. During the entire season, the sympathy of the Berlin audience belonged to their offensive game of the Vienna team, after the game the West German Schalke were mercilessly whistled.
