Erdl joined the Vienna as a youth, where he made his debut on the combat team in autumn 1929. After he was only used sporadically at first, he was able to secure the regular place as the left winger in spring 1931, where he replaced Leopold Giebisch and played in a series of attacks with Friedrich Gschweidl , Josef Adelbrecht and Gustav Tögel . At the end of the season he was able to celebrate the first championship title in the club's history with the Döblingern.

This also qualified for participation in the Mitropacup , where they reached the final with victories over Bocskai FC Debrecen and AS Roma . There the blue and yellow met in the only purely Austrian final in the history of this competition on the Vienna AC . After a 3-2 win in the first game, a 2-1 win was also achieved in the home game on the Hohe Warte , with Erdl scoring both goals for the winning team.

After a second place in the following season, another championship title was won in 1933. In the next few years Vienna was always represented with Erdl in the top regions of the table, but the only other title in this period was the victory in the ÖFB Cup in 1937 with a 2-0 final against the Wiener Sport-Club . In early 1938 Erdl left his parent club and then played for the second division SV Straßenbahn Wien , where, however, despite other well-known reinforcements such as Johann Luef , Josef Hassmann and Karl Jestrab, the promotion to the top division was not successful.

In 1942 he returned to Vienna for the final round of the German championship, where he played in a storm series with Karl Bortoli and Karl Decker and reached the final against FC Schalke 04 , which was lost 2-0. In the two following years he won two more Gaumeist titles with the Döblingern, in between he was active as a guest player at Dresdner SC , where he reached the German championship final for the second time in a row in 1943 . This time Erdl was able to celebrate a 3-0 victory over FV Saarbrücken with his secondary players Richard Hofmann and Helmut Schön .

After the end of the war, Erdl returned to the tram drivers and in the 1950s was still active in other lower-class clubs.

National team

Erdl's first game for the national team took place in a 4-1 win against Belgium in June 1933 in Vienna, when he scored the home team's first goal after a pass from Matthias Sindelar . At that time, however, Rudolf Viertl was mostly used in the left winger position, including at the 1934 World Cup , so it would be until October 1935 before Erdl had his second appearance in a 4: 4 against Hungary , this time as the left runner . His third and last international match lasted only a few minutes for him when he temporarily replaced the ailing Rudolf Geiter against Italy in May 1936 .
