Career

Johann Luef came from the amateur club Baumgartner Sportfreunde and started his career in Hütteldorf in 1926. In his first championship season he scored 15 goals in only 12 games and finished third with the Hütteldorf team. He also shot his club in the Austrian Cup final in the same year. In the semifinals, the Rapidler played against Admira ; a 2: 2 forced a decisive game. In this match the young striker scored two goals, including the decisive goal to make it 4: 3 against Jedleseer in the 87th minute. The Hütteldorfer clearly won the final against their district rivals FK Austria Wien from Ober St. Veit 3-0; Luef netted to make it 2-0. With the cup win, Luef and his team were entitled to participate in the Mitropacup , the forerunner of today's European Cup . When the competition was held for the first time, the Hütteldorfer made it into the final against Sparta Prague , where they lost with a total score of 7: 4. Johann Luef was only used in the second leg on the Hohe Warte , where he scored the interim 2-0 (final score 2-1). Also in the championship it was “only” enough to take second place.

In 1928 Rapid came back to the final of the Mitropa Cup and lost again. In the finals against Ferencvárosi Torna Club , however, Luef was not used. In the championship, however, the striker was able to triumph with the team for the first time. This title win could be repeated in 1929; In the Mitropacup, however, the end came this time in the semifinals against the eventual winner Újpest Budapest . In 1930 the time had come: Johann Luef was in the Mitropacup final with Rapid for the third time, but this time his team won. The striker played with Rapid against Sparta Prague - an opponent who still had painful memories from the Mitropacup final in 1927. His goal after just nine minutes in Prague paved the way for Hütteldorfen. The 2-0 away win was the cornerstone of the triumph, the match in Vienna ended 2: 3.

Since 1929 Johann Luef also played for the Austrian national team . He made his debut in 1929 in a 3: 3 win against Czechoslovakia in Prague . Up until his last appearance for the team in 1933, Luef played a total of 12 times for Austria, including three games at the time of the legendary wonder team, such as the 8: 1 against Switzerland in Basel . After his involvement in the national team, Johann Luef remained active at the club level at Rapid Vienna until 1937, and in 1935 was even unbeaten with the team champions.

Then he left the Hütteldorfer and played for the second division SV Straßenbahn Wien , where, however, despite further notable reinforcements such as Franz Erdl , Josef Hassmann and Karl Jestrab, the promotion to the top division did not succeed. During the war years, Luef was a player coach at SK Vorwärts Steyr .
