Johann "Hansi" Horvath (born May 20, 1903 ; † July 30, 1968 ) was an Austrian football player in the position of a striker . At the end of the 1920s he was one of the most successful goal scorers of the Austrian national team and was able to reach two Mitropa cup finals with Rapid Vienna .

Career

From Simmering to Hütteldorf

Hansi Horvath began his football career at 1. Simmeringer SC . In Simmering he soon became the new striker “star” and made his debut on January 13, 1924 in Nuremberg against Germany , where he immediately scored his first goal in the team. From this point on, Hans Horvath had a permanent place in the striker empire of the national team. Numerous clubs tried to lure the young player away from the small suburb club. However, Hansi Horvath stayed in Simmering for the time being and achieved 3rd place in the championship in 1926, the best result the club has ever achieved.

Hansi Horvath remained successful with the national team, shooting three-packs against Bulgaria (1924), Sweden (1925) and Switzerland (1926), which increased its market value noticeably. Shortly before the start of the 1927 season, Hansi Horvath's move to Rapid in Hütteldorf was finally announced. With the green-whites, the striker was able to become runner-up straight away and move into the Mitropapokalfinale , the final of the forerunner competition of the European Cup . However, the Rapidler around Hansi Horvath lost the final against Sparta Prague . In the following season, the Simmeringen champion and moved again with his club in the Mitropapokalfinale. He himself scored six goals in eight Mitropacup games this season - but in the final he had to admit defeat with the green-whites again - this time the winner was Ferencvárosi FC . Hansi Horvath left Hütteldorf in 1930, having previously won his second championship title, and went to Meidling for SC Wacker Vienna .

Missed miracle team, World Cup 1934 and end of career

Although Horvath could no longer play for the Mitropa Cup with Wacker, he celebrated numerous successes in the national team. In 1931, however, a momentous event occurred. The Scotland game was on, which is considered to be the birth of the miracle team . Hansi Horvath was supposed to play in the left wing, but he called in sick. The young Adi Vogl made his team debut, offered an outstanding performance in the 5-0 victory over the Scots, who have to accept their first defeat on the European mainland, and ousted Horvath from the team. So Hansi Horvath only stayed short guest appearances in the wonder team. After most of the players in the wonder team went abroad in 1933, the striker got his regular seat back. He thanked for this in qualifying for the 1934 World Cup with a flawless hat trick in just 14 minutes in the game against Bulgaria.

Although Hansi Horvath was on the squad for the 1934 World Cup , he was initially not allowed to take part because he had to play a supplementary game in the championship for his new club, FC Wien . Hansi Horvath first played in the quarter-final against Hungary , where he brought Austria 1-0 up front. The game ended 2-1 for the Austrians, who were stopped in the semi-finals by eventual world champions Italy . Hansi Horvath ended his team career after the World Cup in 1934 and then played for his old club Simmering for a few years.
