Friedrich "Fritz" Gschweidl (born December 13, 1901 in Vienna ; † April 15, 1970 ibid) was an Austrian football player , coach and member of the wonder team .

Career

The tall striker began his career in 1919 at Strebersdorf and came to First Vienna Football Club in 1894 via the second division SC Movement XX in 1924 . "The long Fritz", as he was called because of his height, was a trained center forward and exercised this position both in the club and later in the national team . Due to its playful flexibility, Gschweidl was also often used as a right connector. He played very useful to the team, was considered very safe on the ball and was able to cover the ball excellently but also to play it back quickly. Equipped with these systems, Fritz Gschweidl immediately became a regular at Vienna and celebrated unforgettable successes with the Döblinger team . He won five Austrian championship titles with Vienna, three cup victories and was also part of the Mitropapokal winning team from 1931. Fritz Gschweidl was still playing in the championship at the age of 45 and had played a total of 774 games for First Vienna FC 1894 by the end of his career in 1948.

Friedrich "Fritz" Gschweidl made his debut in the Austrian national soccer team on May 4, 1924 in a game against Hungary in Budapest . At the first international match of the so-called wonder team on May 16, 1931 against Scotland , Gschweidl was already 29 years old and had 27 team appearances behind him. In the national team, as a good goalscorer and header player, he was the ideal complement to Matthias Sindelar . The "long Fritz" played his last game for the national team on March 24, 1935 in the team's 2-0 home defeat against Italy . In the period from 1924 to 1935 he made 44 international matches for Austria, scoring 12 goals. Gschweidl scored his goals in the era of the wonder team against Germany (2), Switzerland and Hungary .

In 1948 Gschweidl ended his active career and in the same year took on a coaching position at Young Boys Bern in Switzerland. Soon afterwards, however, he decided to return to his learned profession as an accountant , which he carried out until his retirement. Fritz Gschweidl died in 1970 at the age of 69 and was buried in the Stammersdorfer Zentralfriedhof (group 0, row 1, number 21). In 1993 Gschweidlgasse in Floridsdorf was named after him in his honor .
