Stammersdorfer central cemetery
The Stammersdorfer Zentralfriedhof (also: Stammersdorf Zentral cemetery ) is a cemetery in the 21st Viennese district of Floridsdorf .
location
The Stammersdorfer Zentralfriedhof is located in the northeast of Floridsdorf in the Stammersdorf district , at Stammersdorfer Straße 244-260. The cemetery is bordered in the east by a border path between Vienna and Lower Austria and in the north by Stammersdorfer Strasse. In the west it borders on the allotment garden club Stammersdorf , in the south on green spaces, single-family houses and a field. The historic center of Stammersdorf is about 2 kilometers west of the cemetery.
history
The people of Stammersdorfer originally buried their dead in the churchyard of the Stammersdorfer parish church , from 1833 on in the newly built Stammersdorfer local cemetery . At the end of the 19th century there were efforts by the Floridsdorf community and some neighboring communities to close the Floridsdorf cemetery and to create a new central cemetery away from the inhabited area. In 1901 the municipality of Stammersdorf agreed to sell two plots of suitable size and location for 66,772 crowns .
The Floridsdorfer Zentralfriedhof was consecrated on May 27, 1903 and opened on June 1, 1903. At the same time, the local cemeteries of Jedlesee , Floridsdorf and Donaufeld were closed to occupancy. In 1907 the name was changed to cemetery in Stammersdorf , in 1920 to Stammersdorfer Friedhof and finally in 1925 as part of an expansion of the cemetery area to Stammersdorfer Zentralfriedhof .
From 1964 to 1966, the second Viennese crematorium was built in an extension to laying out hall 2 . The aim was to create an opportunity to carry out cremations in the part of Vienna, which is located on the left bank of the Danube and is growing in population, as this was previously only possible in the Simmering fire hall at the Vienna Central Cemetery . The funeral hall was rebuilt so that funeral services for both burial and cremations could take place. The planning was carried out by the architect Josef Strelec, the design by Erich Boltenstern . A window at the front of the anteroom was created by the painter Hermann Bauch , a large steel cross outside the hall by Walter Schulz. In 1981 the operation of the crematorium was stopped for economic reasons, only from 1984 to 1986 it was resumed due to a renovation of the Simmering fire hall.
At the end of the 1980s, the two laying out halls were renovated and rebuilt according to plans by Christof Riccabona . Among other things, the altar wall in the funeral hall 2 was decorated with a gold mosaic by Hermann Bauch junior.
General
The Stammersdorfer Zentralfriedhof is administered by Friedhöfe Wien GmbH . It covers an area of 192,970 m² and houses 23,034 grave sites. This makes it the fifth largest urban cemetery in Vienna in terms of area. Despite its size, due to its location right on the city limits, it is only connected to the public transport network by the regional bus line 125. The cemetery has one of the eight branches of the cemetery nursery of Friedhöfe Wien GmbH . There is an urn grove each in the eastern and western parts of the cemetery .
In another section you can find the graves of the dead of the Red Army and the dead Soviet occupation soldiers . This military cemetery near the urn cemetery was occupied with group and individual graves from 1945 to 1945. A mass grave was laid in group 3 for 105 victims of the Brno death march in 1945.
