Alfred Ebenbauer
Alfred Ebenbauer (born October 13, 1945 in Sankt Michael in Obersteiermark ; † August 11, 2007 ) was an Austrian Germanic and Scandinavian Medievalist . From 1991 to 1998 he was Rector of the University of Vienna and from 1991 to 1993 President of the Austrian Rectors' Conference .
Life
Alfred Ebenbauer was the first of five children of an agricultural officer. He completed his Matura in Judenburg and graduated with honors. He studied German literature and history at the University of Vienna , where in 1970 "was sub auspiciis Praesidentis " for his work "Helgisage and Helgikult" doctorate . From 1970 to 1978 he was a university assistant and lecturer at the Vienna Institute for German Studies. In 1978 he qualified as a professor for “Older German and Nordic Language and Literature”. This was followed by teaching assignments at the Leopold-Franzens University Innsbruck and the Ruprecht Karls University Heidelberg .
In 1980 he was appointed to the professorship for Older German and Germanic Philology in Heidelberg . In 1981 he switched to the chair for older German language and literature at the University of Vienna, was dean of the humanities faculty from 1987 to 1990 and then rector of the university until 1998 .
Alfred Ebenbauer committed suicide on August 11, 2007 at the age of 61. His farewell ceremony in the Simmering fire hall took place on August 23, 2007; his urn is buried in an honorary grave at the Stammersdorfer Zentralfriedhof (group 21, row 3, number 22).
Act
Ebenbauer was a member of numerous scientific associations. He was involved in international partnerships at the University of Vienna and initiated joining the Erasmus and Socrates programs . From 2000 to 2006 he was President of the Austrian Exchange Service (ÖAD) . Ebenbauer stands for the implementation of the university reform ( UOG 1993 ).
In addition, he was President of the Austrian Rectors' Conference from 1991 to 1993, and its Vice-President from 1993 to 1998. He was instrumental in reforming the education and university system in Austria.
For his services to the Austrian education and university system, he was honored in April 2005 with the Great Gold Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .
