Eva Blimlinger (born September 12, 1961 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( Die Grünen ) and historian . She has been a member of the Austrian National Council since October 23, 2019 .

From 2011 to September 2019 she was rector of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . From January 2018 to June 2019 she was President of the Austrian University Conference .

Origin and education

Eva Blimlinger and her brother Thomas Blimlinger are grandchildren of the non-party, SPÖ- nominated Minister of Justice (with interruptions 1945–1954 in office) and sports official Josef Gerö . Eva graduated from high school in 1979 and then completed a degree in German Philology, History and Social Studies at the University of Vienna by 1990 , which she completed with the academic title of Magistra .

Professional career

From 1991 to 1992 she was the equal treatment officer of the Austrian Rectors' Conference and from 1992 to 1999 head of the public relations office at the University of Applied Arts Vienna . From 1999 to 2004 she was research coordinator of the Austrian Commission of Historians and from 2002 to 2004 managing director of the Premiere scholarship program. In 2004 she became head of the department for project coordination and process management art and research funding at the University of Applied Arts.

In 2011 she was elected rector of the Academy of Fine Arts. The proportion of female rectors in Austria rose from 0 to 19 percent after the molecular biologist Sonja Hammerschmid , the materials technician Sabine Seidler and the neuropsychologist Christa Neuper were also elected rectors within a year .

In addition, Blimlinger is responsible for the scientific coordination of the Commission for Provenance Research as well as a member and deputy chairman of the Art Restitution Advisory Board set up at the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture .

In December 2017, Blimlinger was elected to succeed Oliver Vitouch as President of the Austrian Universities Conference for the 2018 to 2019 term.

On May 7, 2019, Johan Frederik Hartle was elected Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna by the University Council. He succeeded Eva Blimlinger in this role on October 1, 2019.

politics

From 2007 to March 2018 Eva Blimlinger was a member of the ORF Public Council nominated by the Greens .

After Blimlinger had expressed her interest in running as the Green candidate for the National Council election in Austria in 2019 , she was elected fourth on the state list for the election in the course of the 81st National Assembly of the Vienna Greens on June 22, 2019 . As a result, she resigned the presidency of the University Conference with effect from July 1, 2019 and won one of the 26 Green mandates in the National Council on September 29 . She is the cultural spokesperson for her party, but did not get a chance as State Secretary for Culture when the government was formed in January 2020 after Ulrike Lunacek was preferred to her . She would have been very annoyed about this because she does not come from the cultural sector, she admitted in an interview on May 13, 2020. Only two days after this statement, Lunacek resigned, but Blimlinger did not show any further interest in the role.
