Georg Winckler (born September 27, 1943 in Ostrau , Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia ) is an Austrian economist . From 1999 to 2011 he was rector of the University of Vienna . From 2005 to 2009 he was President of the European University Association (EUA).

Life

Georg Winckler received his PhD from the University of Vienna in 1968. rer. pole. PhD . In 1978 Georg Winckler became full professor for economic theory and economic policy at the Institute for Economic Sciences at the University of Vienna. From 1999 to 2011 Winckler was Rector of the University of Vienna, and from 2000 to 2005 he was also President of the Austrian Rectors' Conference .

In the course of implementing the University Act 2002 at the University of Vienna, he made major structural changes; the organizational plan proposed by the Rectorate was extremely controversial. The students' protest against the rector reached its climax on January 20, 2004, when strangers threw a cake at the rector during a panel discussion . A controversy between Winckler and local functionaries of the Austrian student body is suspected as the background to this act . Winckler had adopted a neutral to cautiously positive stance on the university reforms from the then Education Minister Elisabeth Gehrer and invited the student representatives at his university to hold appropriate talks; the student representatives, which rejected Gehrer's plans as out of the question, had described Winckler for his stance as “authoritarian” and “anti-democratic”, given him various “ultimatums” and organized an appointment to the rectorate. The attack with a cake caused considerable media echo. Winckler himself took this in retrospect with humor.

From 2004 to 2007 he was a member of the European Research Advisory Board (EURAB), and since April 2008 Winckler has been a member of the Council for the European Research Area (ERAB) at the EU Commission. From March 2005 to March 2009 he was President of the European University Association (EUA). Winckler has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board and President of the ERSTE Foundation Association since February 2012 .
