The Dundalk Football Club is a 1903 established football club from the Irish town of Dundalk . Dundalk has played in the League of Ireland without interruption since 1926 .

history

The club was founded in 1903 as the Dundalk Great Northern Railway (GNR) Association Club ; the first few years the club played at the local level until the outbreak of the First World War , when the club temporarily stopped playing. After the World War ended, the club resumed playing in the 1919 season, initially again in a local league. After the independence of the Irish Free State , the club was not included in the newly formed Football League of Ireland . However, the club benefited indirectly from the new league: Since the members of the League of Ireland at the same time eliminated from the Leinster Senior League , the strongest regional Irish league, Dundalk was able to take one of the now unoccupied starting places in Leinster; they were sometimes the only non-Dublin team there. Dundalk finished the 1925/26 season third; because of this success, the club was finally included in the 1926/27 season as one of two new teams in the League of Ireland .

In 1930 the club was renamed Dundalk FC; In 1933, the first club not from Dublin to win the Irish championship. In 1942 he won the first all-Irish competition since independence, the Dublin and Belfast Inter-City Cup , and the first of a total of nine victories in the Cup of the Republic. From the 1960s to the 1990s, Dundalk was one of the most successful Irish teams with eight championships in 33 years, five cup and four league cup wins. Since the turn of the millennium, however, things went downhill with Dundalk, despite another cup win in 2002, they were relegated to the 2nd division, the First Division . As runner-up in 2006 in the second season of the First Division , Dundalk qualified for the relegation games against the eleventh of the Premier Division Waterford United and was able to decide for themselves. Due to a planned restructuring of the League of Ireland for the 2007 season , Dundalk was denied promotion, while Waterford was allowed to remain in the Premier Division . After winning the First Division in 2008, Dundalk has been back in the Premier Division since the 2009 season . On the last day of the 2014 season, Dundalk took the lead with a 2-0 win against Cork City and was able to celebrate their first championship in 19 years. In the same season, the club had already won the Irish League Cup .

Dundalk has already played 14 times in European competitions, but almost never reached the second round, but the team was very strong at home in the 70s / 80s, they did not lose a home game in five cup competitions in a row.
