The Cobh Ramblers Football Club , ( Irish Cumann Peile Chóstóirí Chóbh ) is a football team founded in 1922 from the southern Irish port city of Cobh . The Cobh Ramblers have played in the League of Ireland since 1985 , but except for three seasons in the 1980s and 1990s, always in the lower season, the First Division .

history

The Ramblers were originally a hockey club, but before the break- away of the Irish Free State from the United Kingdom , many members of the team often played against British soldiers, so that in 1922 they turned the club into a pure football club. From its inception until 1985, the club played in the Munster Senior League . Towards the end of this period, the Ramblers achieved two of their greatest successes; As a club not belonging to the League of Ireland, they made it into the quarter-finals of the Irish Cup in 1980/81 , in 1982/83 even after victories against Dundalk and Finn Harps made it into the semifinals against the Sligo Rovers , the measurement should be because of the mode of execution, which was long Playing replay until one team could win a game in 90 minutes would be one of the most exciting in Irish Cup history. The first game ended after a lead by the Ramblers, which the Rovers could only equalize in the 88th minute, 1: 1. In the first replay the Ramblers were able to equalize a 2-0 deficit in the last 20 minutes, in the second replay, which was then scheduled, both teams could not score in front of 22,000 spectators. At half-time of the third replay, the Ramblers looked like the sure winners after a superior game and a 2-0 lead in the Rovers stadium, but they were able to equalize after an assault in the second half and in stoppage time with the final whistle with 3: 2 take the lead and win the semi-finals after four games. Since then, the Ramblers have never advanced that far in the Irish Cup.

In 1985, the Ramblers were accepted into the Football League of Ireland, after two seasons that ended as sixth of the ten clubs in the First Division , in the third season 1987/88 as runners-up, they were promoted to the Premier Division , Ireland's top division, However, this was followed by immediate relegation. In 1991 and 1992 you failed as a third party twice on the rise before the second ascent succeeded in 1993. But the club could not prevail in the Premier Division, while in 1994 relegation as the third to last could still be avoided, the club rose in 1995 as the penultimate. 2007 you could achieve promotion to the Premier Division again, but rose again in 2008. In addition, the club did not acquire the license for the First Division in 2009. For this reason, the Ramblers played in 2009 in the A Championship , the third highest division. In 2013 the club received the license for the First Division again.
