The Galway United Football Club , ( Irish Cumann Peile Ghaillimh Aontaithe ) is a football club founded in 1937 from the western Irish city of Galway . The club was initially called Galway Rovers and was accepted into the League of Ireland under this name in 1977 , before adopting its current name in 1981.

history

After the club was founded in 1937, Galway played quite successfully in the lower Irish leagues. 1976/77 Galway was then invited as a non-league club to participate in the League of Ireland League Cup; because of the convincing performance (there were at least two draws against members of the League of Ireland in three games) the then Galway Rovers were admitted to the league for the 1977/78 season. Initially rather unsuccessful in league operations, it made it to the final of the league cup in 1981. The final, however, was lost after an even game on penalties against Dundalk FC .

In the mid-1980s, Galway was one of the leading teams in the league; 1984/85 succeeded but unsuccessful entry into the cup final. In 1985/86 Galway won the league cup and after 16 unbeaten league games in a row and a league lead until March was only runner-up.

After the first and to date only victory of the Irish Cup in May 1991, the sudden crash followed in the 1991/92 season, the club was relegated as the worst team in the Premier Division . It succeeded, however, by the championship of the First Division, the immediate promotion. However, the second descent in 1995/96 then led to a three-year long second division, although in the 1996/97 season as a second division club won the league cup. Galway has played in the First Division for the third time since 2002 .

So far, Galway United has qualified for three European Cups. However, the club failed each point in the first round. 1985/86 it failed in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup at the Danish representative Lyngby BK 2: 3 and 0: 1, the following year they lost in the UEFA Cup against the Dutch representatives Groningen FC 1: 3 and 1: 5, 1991/92 they failed again in the Cup Winners' Cup at a Danish club, this time at Odense BK with 0: 3 and 0: 4.

From 2005 to 2011, Nick Leeson , who caused the collapse of Barings Bank in 1995, was the club's general manager .

The 2011 season ended Galway United as the last in the Premier Division and was determined after the lost relegation games against Monaghan United as relegated. In December 2011, the board announced that they had withdrawn the license applied for for the 2012 season. A year later the club returned as Galway FC. Since November 2014 he has had his old name again and has played in the League of Ireland since the 2015 season .
