The Waterford Football Club (1982-2016 Waterford United ) is established in 1930 Irish football club from the city of Waterford , in the Premier Division plays.
history
The club was founded in 1930 as Waterford Football Club and immediately accepted into the League of Ireland and was able to complete the second season in third. Nevertheless, they left the league for the next two seasons. After the resumption in 1934, the team quickly improved in terms of sport. 1937 achieved the first major success in the club's history; Waterford won the Irish Cup by beating St. James's Gate 2-1 in the final. In the following year they became runner-up; the next high point was the year 1941 when Waterford could qualify for both a playoff for the championship as for the cup final. While the cup final against Cork United was only lost in the replay after a draw in the first game 1: 3, Waterford did not even play for the championship playoff, but instead withdrew from the league for the duration of the Second World War .
After the second resumption in the league in 1945, it took until the second half of the 1950s until Waterford was able to achieve some successes again, both the 1954/55 and 1955/56 seasons could be ended in the top three and in 1959 they were back in the final for the cup: as in 1941, they lost after a 2-2 draw in the first game in the play-off, this time against St Patrick's Athletic .
In 1964/65 they finished last, only to become champions the following year; this was the beginning of the golden age of Waterford; within eight years to 1973, six championships, three of them in a row (1968-70). In 1968 and 1972 there was also the possibility of winning the double, but the final of the cup was lost 3-0; 1968 against the Shamrock Rovers and 1972 against the Cork Hibernians . Even after that, Waterford was able to place itself at least in the middle of the championship until 1986. The highlights of this time were three cup finals in 1979, 1980 and 1986, of which only the 1980 one against St Patrick's Athletic could be won, as well as the victories in 1974 and 1985 in the league cup. In 1982 it was renamed Waterford United .
After 1988 things went downhill with Waterford, in 1989 they were relegated to the First Division , in which they mostly played until 2003 despite several short memberships in the Premier Division . In the 2002/03 season, however, the promotion to this succeeded again, in which Waterford has been able to hold since then and in 2004 even qualified for the cup final again after almost 20 years. Longford Town proved too strong for Waterford at 1: 2.
Despite the eleventh place in the 2006 season and the lost relegation against Dundalk FC , the league could be held, as champions Shelbourne FC was revoked in February 2007 by the license committee of the Irish Association of the license for the Premier Division. A year later, the club was again eleventh and relegated after losing the relegation again. 2010 and 2012, the return to the play-offs was missed. For the 2017 season, the club was taken over by Lee Power , who also owns the English club Swindon Town , and renamed Waterford FC . At the end of the season, as league champions, he was promoted to the Premier Division.
