The Drogheda United Football Club , ( Irish : Cumann Peile Dhroichead Átha Aontaithe ) is a football club from the Irish city of Drogheda founded in 1919 . The club in its current form was formed in 1975 through the merger of Drogheda FC with Drogheda United and has played in the League of Ireland ever since .
history
Drogheda United was founded in 1919, but the team always played in lower leagues. When the idea of a professional team for the League of Ireland developed in Drogheda , United was not strengthened, but a new club was founded in 1961: Drogheda FC This was accepted into the Football League of Ireland in 1962 during a league reform. In the first few years the team was only moderately successful; only in 1971 made it into the final of the Irish Cup, but this was lost in a replay with 0: 3 against Limerick. In 1975 the FC and United merged while retaining the name United and the FC's right to start in the Football League of Ireland. Already in the first year after the merger they made it to the final of the cup, again unsuccessfully.
United was very successful in the early 1980s; 1982/83 the team was runner-up in the Republic of Ireland and qualified for the UEFA Cup 1983/84; However, she was eliminated in the first round against Tottenham Hotspur after losing two games with a total goal difference of 0:14. In the same season they also won the league cup. From the end of the 80s United had to go through a dry spell as an elevator team , they relegated several times to the First Division . At the beginning of the new millennium, things went better for United, so a larger stadium was tackled.
In winter / spring 2005/06 the team's two greatest successes should be achieved, first in December 2005 the victory against Irish champions 2005 Cork City in the cup final and thus qualification for both the UEFA Cup and the Setanta Sports Cup and then on April 22, 2006 again by beating Cork City, winning the same as the first team from the Republic of Ireland at all. In 2007, the first Irish championship was celebrated seven points ahead. In 2009 Drogheda was second to last in the Premier Division and achieved the class remaining only by the fortunate circumstance that Derry City 's license was withdrawn and the Bray Wanderers were finally defeated 2-0 in the relegation relegation . 2012 they reached the 2nd place in the league and also won the League of Ireland Cup in the final with 3-1 against Shamrock Rovers .
emblem
The emblem of the traditional club with a star and a crescent moon uses elements from the city arms of Drogheda. Assumptions that the crescent moon represents a reference to the Ottoman Empire , which sent ships with food to Ireland during the Great Famine in Ireland in 1847 , are not valid because the city's coat of arms with crescent moon was mentioned in writing before (1844) and can be traced back to the Middle Ages should be.

- ↑ Dzsihad Hadelli: Drogheda: What is the crescent moon doing in Ireland? , islamische-zeitung.de January 25, 2015. " Despite some fuss about whether there is more myth than truth in the history of the Ottoman relief effort - and whether the crescent moon actually got into the coat of arms for this reason - Irish President Mary McAleese supported her Visit to Turkey in 2011. In addition, a thank you plaque was attached to the Turkish people at a hotel in Drogheda in 1995. It was fixed under the hotel windows, during which time the Ottoman seafarers - who brought the relief supplies - are said to have stayed overnight . "

- ↑ President tells Turks an anecdote of myth not fact . The Irish Times, March 25, 2010. " Liam Reilly, an administrator with the Old Drogheda Society based in the town's Millmount Museum, said last night the comments were incorrect." There are no records with the Drogheda Port Authority of this ever happening. Drogheda historians can trace the star and crescent back to 1210 when the British governor of Ireland, King John Lackland, granted the town its first charter, 'he said. "
