The AC Libertas (officially: Associazione Calcio Libertas ) is a san-marinesischer football club from the town of Borgo Maggiore . The club takes part in the league operation of the national championship, the Campionato Sammarinese di Calcio . With eleven successes in the Coppa Titano , the club is the country's record cup winner.
history
The club was founded in September 1928 under the name SP Libertas (Società Polisportiva Libertas) as the country's first football club.
The club achieved its first success in 1937 when it won the national cup competition, the Coppa Titano . In the early years this competition was held irregularly. The second edition of the competition, which Libertas was able to win again, only took place in 1950. The club won the national cup competition six times in a row, which was not officially held at the time, and thus set an unprecedented record. In the seventh edition in 1965, AC Juvenes / Dogana finally ended Libertas' winning streak and won the cup for the first time. Since then, the club has won four more cups.
The establishment of a national football league under the name Campionato Sammarinese di Calcio followed in 1985. In the championship operation, the club could not show any successes in contrast to the cup competition, the only championship was won in 1996.
In the 2007/08 season , AC Libertas took part in qualifying for the UEFA Cup . In the first qualifying round, the club met Irish representative Drogheda United . Since the own venue did not meet the requirements of UEFA , the home game in Serravalle was played in the Stadio Olimpico . With a goal from Federico Nanni , the team reached a 1-1 draw, which also meant the first point win by a San-Marinese team in a European cup competition. However, with a 3-0 defeat in the second leg, Libertas was eliminated from the competition early.
