geography

Serravalle is the largest and most densely populated municipality in the republic with 10,894 inhabitants (almost 2000 of them of foreign origin) and an area of 10.53 km².

The place borders on the San Marinese municipalities of Domagnano and Borgo Maggiore and on the Italian municipalities of Verucchio , Rimini and Coriano (all in the province of Rimini ).

Serravalle includes the districts (Italian Frazione , San-Marine Curazie ) Cà Ragni , Cinque Vie , Dogana (150 m slm , approx. 7000 inhabitants), Falciano (148 m, approx. 1000 inhabitants), Galazzano , Lesignano , Ponte Mellini , Rovereta (148 m) and Valgiurata .

The village of Dogana , which lies on the border with Italy at the beginning of the road to Rimini, is the largest urban center and the largest town in the country with almost 7,000 inhabitants.

history

In the medieval sources, the main town was called Castrum Olnani , the village of the elms or wild ash . The current name comes from the Italian words serra (mountain range) and valle (valley). The place was first documented on August 15, 962 in a writing by Otto I as Serravallum . Serravalle was a fortified outpost of the Malatesta in the Middle Ages and was incorporated into the Republic of San Marino in 1463 as one of the last territorial expansions. The central square in the main town of Serravalle is dedicated to Giuseppe Bertoldi , a scholar who was born here around 1355 and who studied the masterpieces of Dante Alighieri in detail. The district of Rovereta is also known for the controversial events of September 30, 1957, when a coup attempt against the then left-wing government in San Marino was carried out by representatives of the opposition (see clashes of Rovereta ).

Attractions

  • Castello dei Malatesta , also called Castello di Serravalle , former Malatesta castle in the historic center of Serravalle.
  • Chiesa di Sant'Andrea (Saint Andrew's Church), built in 1824 and renovated in 1973 by the Italian architect Luigi Fonti from Rimini.
  • Collezione Maranello Rosso , Automobile Museum ( Ferrari and Abarth in the Falciano district )

In the municipality there are several important commercial and industrial areas such as Rovereta , Galazzano and La Ciarulla .

Sports

Serravalle is represented with the teams SS Cosmos , SS Folgore / Falciano and AC Juvenes / Dogana in the Liga Campionato Sammarinese di Calcio . The club San Marino Calcio plays in the Italian third division Lega Pro Prima Divisione .

In addition, Serravalle is home to the San Marino Stadium , where the San Marino national soccer team plays their home games.

environment

In Serravalle there are extensive parks, the Parco Ausa near Dogana and the "Parco Laiala", which was inaugurated recently.

Public facilities

The municipality of Serravalle has numerous public facilities, including many kindergartens and elementary schools, a modern middle school, a health center and several pharmacies, as well as a cinema, a theater, a Sala Polivalente (congress hall) and the social center at Dogana.

In Dogana alone there are three large department stores that, thanks to the significantly lower VAT in San Marino, can sell their goods more cheaply than in Italy and live from a lively shopping tourism. The San Marino World Trade Center is also under construction, a large trade center with many congress halls, high-rise buildings for government offices and facilities for recreation and leisure right on the border with Italy.
