The municipality owes its name to a spring that rises at the foot of Montecerreto , a hill covered with pine trees, and with its water St. According to tradition, Marinus baptized new followers of Christianity. According to legend, at the beginning of the 4th century Marinus sought refuge in a cave in the Rupe della Baldasserona , in the area of today's Acquaviva. The Chiesa di Sant'Andrea , built in the Middle Ages and redesigned several times since then , was built on the remains of a building from the 3rd century, which was a church built by Marinus himself on the site of a pagan cult site previously dedicated to the Roman god Mercurius should. In the district of La Serra , a bronze figure was found that depicts Mercurius sitting on a stone. The name Acquaviva is first mentioned in 1253.
In 885, the Placito Feretrano document was issued in the Corte di Stirvano on Montecerreto ; it is the oldest document currently known to attest to the independence of San Marino.
