Borgo Maggiore is a municipality ( Comune in Italian , Castello in San Marino ) in the Republic of San Marino .

Borgo Maggiore has 6,922 inhabitants and an area of 9.01 km².
The place borders on the San-Marinese communities Serravalle , Domagnano , Faetano , Fiorentino , San Marino and Acquaviva as well as on the Italian community Verucchio ( province Rimini ).
Borgo Maggiore includes the districts ( Frazione in Italian , Curazie in San- Marine ) Cà Melone (360 m slm ), Cà Rigo (148 m), Cailungo (360 m), San Giovanni sotto le Penne (460 m), Valdragone (466 m ) and Ventoso (360 m).
The main town of the municipality is the second largest city in the country, after the Dogana agglomeration in the municipality of Serravalle, and lies at the foot of Mount Titano .
history
The place was once called Mercatale ( market town ) and has remained one of the most important market places in the republic to this day. The first documented market in town took place in 1243. At the end of the 13th century, the place and the independent communities Cailungo and San Giovanni sotto le Penne belonged to the ten Gualdarie of San Marino. In 1879 the place was renamed Borgo Maggiore.
Attractions
In the center of the main town is the Piazza Grande (Great Square), where the traditional market is held every Thursday.
The square is dominated by a 17th century palace whose clock tower (Torre dell'Orologio) was designed by Francesco Azzurri in 1896. Also on the Piazza Grande is the Chiesa del Suffragio (dt. Church of the Intercession) from the 18th century, which is dedicated to St. Sant'Antimo was consecrated.
At the motorway exit of Borgo Maggiore is the modern Santuario della Beata Vergine della Consolazione (dt. Shrine of Our Blessed Lady of Consolation), which was designed by Giacomo Michelucci in 1958.
traffic
The Funivia di San Marino cable car leads from the town up to Mount Titano to the capital, San Marino . Borgo Maggiore has one of the Republic's two heliports (the other is on Aviosuperficie Torraccia in Domagnano ).
Sports
Borgo Maggiore is represented by the teams SP Cailungo , AC Libertas and SS San Giovanni in the Liga Campionato Sammarinese di Calcio .
