San Giovanni sotto le Penne is a village that belongs to the Castello Borgo Maggiore in the Republic of San Marino .

history

The village lies at an altitude of 460 m above sea level. NN and became known through archaeological excavations. The artefacts found after radiocarbon dating from between 5000 and 4000 BC BC, are the oldest finds in the Republic of San Marino. Further excavations have found artifacts and brick kilns from the time of the Seius Sallustius family , which indicate that the area of ​​San Giovanni sotto le Penne was used as a settlement by the Romans. The namesake of the place is John the Baptist . In the 13th century the place was still an independent municipality. The excavation objects are in the Museo di Stato.
