geography
Domagnano has 3,566 inhabitants and an area of 6.62 km².
The place borders on the San-Marinese communities Faetano , Borgo Maggiore and Serravalle as well as on the Italian community Coriano ( province Rimini ).
Domagnano includes the districts ( Frazione in Italian , Curazie in San Marino ) Cà Giannino , Fiorina , Piandivello , Spaccio Giannoni and Torraccia .
The municipality's coat of arms shows a running white wolf in front of a mountain crowned by a ruined tower, symbolizing the old place name Montelupo ( "Wolfsberg" ). The Montelupo hill in the Torraccia district offers beautiful views of both Mount Titano in the west and the Adriatic Sea in the east.
history
On the Montelupo near Torraccia there was a strategically important fortress of the Malatesta in the Middle Ages , a fortified tower from Lombard times, from which the surrounding area could be monitored. The Montelupo was incorporated into the municipality in 1463 after the conquest by San Marino. The southwestern part of Domagnano has belonged to the Republic of San Marino since its foundation.
Significant archaeological finds come from the Domagnano area: in addition to around 2,000 Roman coins, the Tesoro di Domagnano (" Treasure of Domagnano ") was discovered in 1892 . It consists of goldsmith's work from the 5th century and was probably the jewelry of an Ostrogothic nobleman. The treasure is now shared among various museums around the world; Most of the objects are in the British Museum in London and in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg , including one of the famous eagle brooches made of gold with gemstone inlays.
Sports
Domagnano is home to FC Domagnano , the country's most successful football club by title. He has won four championships in San Marino, eight cups of the Coppa Titano competition (similar to the league cup) and three association cups .
traffic
In the district of Torraccia is the Aviosuperficie Torraccia , the only airport in San Marino.
