William Nathaniel "Buck" Showalter (born May 23, 1956 in DeFuniak Springs , Florida ) is an American baseball player and manager . He is currently under contract with the Baltimore Orioles .

biography

Showalter began his baseball career in college baseball at Mississippi State University , where he was also recognized as an All American . In the fifth round of the 1977 draft, he was signed by the New York Yankees and spent seven years in the various minor league clubs of the Yankees. Showalter did not succeed in making the leap into Major League Baseball , despite good performances, as his position as first baseman did not get past the Yankees legend Don Mattingly .

In 1985 his career began as a manager in the minor leagues before he was promoted to the Yankees' coaching staff in 1990. After Stump Merrill was fired in 1992, Showalter took over the position of manager with the Yankees. In the strike season in 1994, the Yankees had the best record of all MLB teams and Showalter became the Manager of the Year in the American League selected. Arguments with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner led to the separation in 1995, although the team had reached the playoffs for the first time since 1981. The following year, the Yankees won the World Series under Joe Torre .

Two years before their 1998 league debut, the Arizona Diamondbacks signed Showalter. He also worked here for three years. Curiously, the Diamondbacks won the World Series just like the Yankees a year after Showalter left.

After an interlude as a baseball analyst at ESPN , Showalter signed a contract with the Texas Rangers on October 11, 2002 . He led this from a very weak team in the 2004 season to a playoff contender, which again earned him the title of Manager of the Year .
