The Mississippi State University (also MSU is called) any State University in Starkville in the northern US state of Mississippi . With 22,226 students ( 2019 ), it is the most important university in Mississippi alongside the University of Mississippi and the University of Southern Mississippi . The university has branches in Meridian and Vicksburg .

history

The university was founded on February 28, 1878 as The Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi (Mississippi A&M) . In 1880 she accepted the first students. With the passage of the Hatch Act by Congress in 1887, the university received funding to set up an agricultural experimental station. The engineering school was founded in 1902 and the agricultural faculty was founded in 1903. In 1932, the Mississippi Legislature changed the name of the institution to Mississippi State College . A graduate school was established in 1936 and the college began awarding doctoral degrees in 1951. Mississippi State University has had its current name since 1958 , following a further renaming by the legislature.

Sports

The MSU sports teams have been called the Bulldogs since 1961 . For a while, the new and old names ( maroons ) were used in parallel. The university is a member of the Southeastern Conference .
