Graduate school
Graduate School refers to educational institutions in the USA , Great Britain , South Africa and Namibia that award academic degrees (e.g. Master's , Ph.D. ). The prerequisite is that the students have previously acquired a first university degree (e.g. undergraduate , bachelor's degree ).
Graduate Schools in the United States and Canada
In the USA and Canada , due to the widely varying quality of teaching, as measured by the university ranking , the admission requirements can be quite different. For example, at top universities such as Harvard University and McGill University , which are each ranked number 1 according to the QS World University Rankings in the USA and Canada, at least a university bachelor's degree (scientific diploma course with bachelor thesis) is required. The undergraduate honors degree qualifies as opposed to the three-year or four-year college - Bachelor, under certain conditions, direct access to PhD programs.
A graduate school can be an independent private or state educational institution or part of a university.
Graduate Schools in Germany
The concept of the so-called graduate school is traditionally the branch of a university in the USA, in which master's and doctoral programs are located (in contrast to the college, where the offers for bachelor students can be found). Subject content comes from the "Departments" - these are to be compared with the German faculties or institutes. Following the example of US universities, master's and doctoral programs from all faculties are bundled in one organizational roof and equipped with interdisciplinary elements. Masters and doctorates are closely interlinked as a successive research training course. The underlying aim is to give students the ability to convey solutions across subject boundaries. The advantages of the model are many. This means that prospective students do not have to look for a suitable master’s course or individual doctoral regulations in every institute.
This principle is still relatively unknown in Germany, only a few universities are organized according to the US model, mainly doctoral programs are offered in German graduate schools (except at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg, where interdisciplinary master's and doctoral programs are organized). As in the USA, there are private, state and university graduate schools in Germany. The admission requirements vary from institution to institution.
