The Capitano di Castello is the head of the administration of a municipality in the Republic of San Marino , which in principle has the same functions as a mayor in Italy.

elections

However, a Capitano di Castello cannot be a member of the Grand and General Council at the same time and is elected to his office by public elections. In accordance with the law of February 24, 1994, candidates are published in a list by the Office of Ufficio di Stato Civile, Servizi demografici ed Elettorali at least 65 days before the election .

Each Castello (municipality) is chaired by the Capitano. The municipal council (Giunta) is formed from additional members. Parishes with a population of less than 2,000 people have seven council members. At Castelli, with a population of over two thousand, the council has nine members.

Councilors and the Capitani di Castello are elected every five years by a direct vote by the citizens of San Marino, older than 18 years. The candidate with the most votes is elected. In the event of a tie, a second ballot will take place between the two candidates. In the event of further equality, the age of the candidates is decisive.

tasks

The Capitani di Castello have advisory and promotional functions and are responsible for the administration of local services. You can act as part of the territory and the population inside your Castello. Their duties also include convening and presiding over the meetings of the Board of Directors, determining the agenda, delegating duties and reporting to Congress. Together with the council they manage the budget of the board of directors and implement the legislative initiative.

Council members can use referendum to express their opinions on the state budget. The citizens of the communes have the opportunity to submit suggestions and requests of general interest to the Capitano di Castello. However, the legislative power is exercised by the Consiglio Grande e Generale .

San Marino is divided into nine giunte (municipal districts), which correspond to the old parishes from the 14th century, each headed by a Capitano di Castello:
