The Marecchia is a 70 km long river in Italy . In ancient times he was called Ariminus and so gave the city of Rimini its name.

course

The river arises approx. 1 km west of Viamaggio (district of Pieve Santo Stefano ) and approx. 4 km south-west of Badia Tedalda in the province of Arezzo in Tuscany in the Alpe della Luna at 1,454 meters above sea level. Approx. 3 km northeast of Badia Tedalda it crosses from the Tuscany region to that of Emilia-Romagna , where it initially flows through the southwestern municipality of Casteldelci ( Rimini province ). Then he crosses the Tuscan exclaves Ca 'Raffaello and Santa Sofia Marecchia (both Badia Tedalda), at the northern end of which the Senatello flows in from the left. Back in the province of Rimini, he enters the municipality of Pennabilli , where in the district of Ponte Massa the Massa enters from the right. Now the Marecchia flows to Novafeltria , passing the city center on the east side and then through the western municipal area (districts Montefotogno , Pietracuta and Torello ) from San Leo . Shortly after Torello, the Rio San Marino (also called Torrente San Marino ) arrives from the right from San Marino ( Acquaviva district ) , located approx . After Verucchio , it comes to Rimini , where the Ausa joins the river from the right , and flows into the Adriatic Sea at Rivabella, a district of Rimini .

Ponte d'Augusto

The Ponte d'Augusto (Ponte di Tiberio) in Rimini

The Ponte d'Augusto is no longer on today's Marecchia, but on an older part of the river that still flowed through the center of Rimini in Roman times.

Valmarecchia

The Marecchia valley extends over the provinces of Rimini (Emilia-Romagna) and Pesaro and Urbino ( Marche region , only represented by the municipalities of Montecopiolo , Monte Grimano Terme and Sassofeltrio ) as well as the north-western part of San Marino (Ausatal near Acquaviva) and the municipality of Badia Tedalda in northeastern Tuscany (Province of Arezzo). The municipalities of the Comunità montana Alta Valmarecchia (Casteldelci, Maiolo , Novafeltria, Pennabilli, San Leo, Sant'Agata Feltria and Talamello ) joined the province of Rimini (Region Emilia) on August 15, 2009 from the Province of Pesaro and Urbino (Region Marche) -Romagna) over. The Marche Region's lawsuit was rejected by the Italian Constitutional Court in 2010. Thus, the Marecchia and the Marechia Valley are now almost entirely in southeastern Emilia .
