The region of the Ionian Islands ( Greek Ιόνια Νησιά Iónia Nisiá ) is around 2300 km², the smallest of the 13 regions (Ez. Περιφέρεια periféria ) of Greece . It consists of the northern islands of the island group of the same name in the Ionian Sea , off the west coast of Greece , including the Diapontian Islands , the Strofades , Tilevoides and Echinaden groups of islands . As the only region in Greece, the Ionian Islands were never part of the Ottoman Empire . As a colony of the Republic of Venice , they were mainly under Italian influence. The islands have belonged to Greece since 1864, the capital is the city of Corfu on the island of the same name.

history

Main article History of the Ionian Islands

Until 1797 the islands belonged to the Republic of Venice . Then they were conquered by Napoleonic France, briefly captured by a Russian-Turkish fleet and declared a joint protectorate of Russia and the Ottoman Empire (until 1807) until they were again occupied by France. In 1809 the British took power. Under their protectorate, the islands together with Kythira and Andikythira formed the Republic of the Ionian Islands . In 1864 the Ionian Islands joined the Greek state after a vote in parliament .

structure

Analogous to the other areas of modern Greece, the Ionian Islands were divided into prefectures (Ez. Greek νομός nomos ) and provinces (Ez. Greek επαρχία eparchia ) in 1864 . In 1866 the province of Kythira was assigned to Laconia , in 1972 to the region of Attica .

The division into prefectures has changed frequently in the course of history; in 2010 the region consisted of the prefectures Kerkyra , Lefkada , Kefallinia and Zakynthos .

As part of the 2010 administrative reform , the regional authority of the prefecture was abolished and the region was given more powers of self-government. The prefectures were replaced by so-called regional districts (Ez. Greek περιφερειακή ενότητα periferiaki enotita ), which send a certain number of members to the 41-member regional council in proportion to their population, but no longer have any political significance. They correspond to the previous prefectures of Corfu, Lefkada and Zakynthos, only the former prefecture of Kefallinia is divided into the regional districts (and municipalities) Kefalonia and Ithaka.

At the same time, the number of municipalities in the Ionian Islands was reduced from 39 to 7 through mergers.

education

With the Ionian University and the TEI Ionion Nison (FH), the region has two higher educational institutions. However, the islands are known for the numerous conservatories, which are in the tradition of the so-called Ionian School and have significantly shaped musical education in the country.

economy

Compared with the GDP of the EU expressed in purchasing power standards, the Ionian islands reach an index of 74.6 (EU-25: 100) (2003). In 2017 the unemployment rate was 19.6%.
