TEI Ionion Nison

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The TEI Ionion Nison ( Greek ΤΕΙ Ιονίων Νήσων ) is one of the two higher educational institutions in the Ionian Islands administrative region in Greece , alongside the Ionian University . It was founded in 2003 from the merger of previously independent universities of applied sciences, and its history goes back to the 19th century.

Predecessor institutions

Argostoli

In 1908 the shipowner Panagis Vallianos founded the Vallianios Agricultural School in Argostoli.

Lixouri

In 1915 the shipowner Panagis Vallianos founded the Vallianios Trade School ( Βαλλιάνειος Επαγγελματική Σχολή ). Regular teaching began in the winter semester of 1927/1928. The school was considered the forerunner of later TEI (technical colleges) and was the only one of its kind in Greece at that time. Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and textile design were taught. The teaching staff was recruited from all over Europe, mostly from Italy, Germany and Switzerland, including the graphic artist and bookbinder George A. Baer , who was lured away from the Kunstgewerbeschule Kassel in 1929 and taught bookbinding there until 1937, as did the bookbinder Siegfried Fuchs (1903 -1978). The buildings survived the earthquake of 1953 almost unscathed. In 1976 the school was formally dissolved, some departments continued to exist independently until the college was founded.

At the ITB 2013, the Hamburg-based company United-Entertain presented a 3D film about the island, which was produced in cooperation with the university. This is the first glasses-free 3D film as a documentation.

Course offer

The aim of the university is to offer education that is closely tailored to the needs of the Ionian Islands. It was also intended to attract young people to the islands when they were still suffering from emigration. The seat of the administration and the presidium is in Argostoli . The six departments are spread over four locations on the three islands of Lefkada , Kefalonia and Zakynthos . Due to the geographical distance, they enjoy greater independence. In addition to the standard course, postgraduate courses and distance learning courses are also offered.
