The Ionian University ( Greek Ιόνιο Πανεπιστήμιο ) is a state Greek university in Corfu (city) on the Ionian island of Corfu . Corfu was the seat of the Ionian Academy , the first modern university in Greece founded in 1824 , in whose spirit the Ionian University sees itself.
The university was founded in 1984. The rector of the university is Professor Dimitrios Tsougarakis.
