The University of Patras ( gr. Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών , Panepistimio Patron ) is the state university in the Greek port city of Patras . The University of Patras with around 24,000 students is the third largest university in Greece. Besides the University of the Peloponnese , this is the only university in the Peloponnese .
history
The university was founded in 1964, with the opening ceremony on November 30, 1966. From 1968 the university moved to a new campus in Rio , in 1972 the first construction phase with 2 buildings was completed (today there are 25).
During the period of the military dictatorship "around 800 to 1,000 students occupied their university in Patras [on November 16, 1973]" in solidarity with the rebellious Athens students of the Polytechneion .
In 1974 a reform took place that guaranteed the university extensive autonomy. The university senate is elected annually from representatives of the university and not determined as before.
campus
The campus is located in Rio (not far from the Rio-Andirrio Bridge ) about 7 kilometers east of the city of Patras .
