Heinz A. Richter

Heinz A. Richter ( Greek Χάιντς Α. Ρίχτερ ; born March 18, 1939 in Heilbronn ) is a German historian specializing in Greece and Cyprus . Most recently, he was an adjunct professor at the Department of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Mannheim .

Life

Richter studied history , political science and English at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He then lived in Greece for a number of years. From 1991 to 2003 he was an adjunct professor for Greek and Cypriot contemporary history at the University of Mannheim. He lives in Schriesheim .

Richter works exclusively on the history of Greece and Cyprus in the 20th and early 21st centuries. In this area he is considered to be the leading expert in Germany. In 1994, together with the classical archaeologist Reinhard Stupperich, he founded the specialist journal “Thetis. Mannheim Contributions to Classical Archeology and History of Greece and Cyprus ”. In addition, in 1995 they called the series “Peleus. Studies on the History and Archeology of Greece and Cyprus ”, in which many of Richter's monographs also appeared. Since 2019 Richter has published the series “Peleus” with the changed subtitle “Studies on the History of Greece and Cyprus”, while “Thetis” has only been devoted to ancient studies since volume 23 (2016-2018) and appears without Richter's participation.

The University of Crete awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2014.

In 2015, Cretan prosecutor Paterakis brought charges against him on the basis of Article 2 of Law 927/1979 (Denial of Genocide and War Crimes). The reason was that Richter in his book Operation Merkur (which contains the airborne battle of Crete ) denied the decisive role of Cretan partisans in World War II and charged them with acts of violence, in which the public prosecutor saw a racist denigration of war victims. He could face up to three years in prison. The German embassy in Athens recommended Richter to avoid Greek soil and not to appear for the trial. The trial, which took place in the defendant's absence, ended in February 2016 with an acquittal.
