The Harokopio University or Charokopos University ( Greek Χαροκόπειο Πανεπιστήμιο ) is a state university in Athens , the University buildings are located, however, in the suburb of Kallithea .
It was founded in 1990 (emerged from the Charokopio home economics college, which has existed since 1929).
history
The university is named after Panagis Charokopos ( Greek Παναγής Χαροκόπος ; 1835-1911). He was agricultural adviser to the Romanian King Carol I and later a Greek MP; in his will he ordered the establishment and funding of a school for scientific training in home economics . For this purpose he had acquired a plot of 20,000 m² in the municipality of Kallithea in 1906 , on which the school buildings were built from 1915 to 1920. A new wing was added in 1959. The building complex housed the "Charokopio University" until 1990, when the Charokopio University was founded.
Todays situation
About 700 students study at the university. This makes it the second smallest university in the country. On the other hand, the number of students is increasing the most in percentage terms compared to other universities in Greece. In 1993/1994 the buildings were completely restored and in 1999–2000 a new building was built for the newly established Department of Geography and the Library.
The Department of Geography is part of the European Spatial Development Planning Network with 16 other European universities .
Faculties and Institutes
There are four departments, each offering Bachelor’s degrees:
- Department of Dietetics and Nutritional Sciences
- Department of Geography
- IT and Telematics Department
- Housekeeping and Ecology Department
Accordingly, there are four postgraduate programs, each with three disciplines.
Some of the programs offered cover areas that are unique or relatively underdeveloped in Greece.
