history

Metamorphosi Sotiros Church in Kallithea

The city is located in the area that was protected in ancient times by Athens' Long Walls . At that time there was a settlement here called Xypete, which is also mentioned in Plato's dialogues . Modern Kallithea owes its rise above all to the first Olympic Games in 1896 , after the plans for the construction of the city of Kallithea had already been decided in December 1884. In the center of the city, the Skopeftirion, a shooting range, was built, which, along with the Athens Olympic Stadium and the Velodrome Neo Faliro further south, today's Karaiskakis Stadium , was one of the three venues.

In 1910, the first tram depot was built in Kallithea, which is on the tram line from Athens to Faliro. The Charokopos University was added in 1925 and the Panteion University in 1928 . In the 1920s, numerous displaced persons from the Greco-Turkish wars settled here and initially used the area of the shooting range as living space before new settlements were built for them. In the 1930s, more Greek emigrants were added, who were resident on the eastern Black Sea coast and who fled to Greece from reprisals by the Soviet Union . The school building built on the shooting range served as a prison during the German occupation during the Second World War and was finally demolished in 1966. Greek resistance fighters and victims of occupation and civil war, such as Nikos Belogiannis , were imprisoned here.

In the 1990s there was another wave of immigration from Greeks from the (former) Soviet Union. In Tzitzifies, in the south of the city, there was a trotting track, which until 2004 was the only one in the whole country; it has since been moved to Markopoulo . Tzitzifies is also known as the center of Greek folklore music. Markos Vamvakaris, Vassilis Tsitsanis, Yannis Papaioannou, Marika Ninou, Sotiria Bellou, Manolis Chiotis , Mary Linda, Yorgos Zambetas, Stelios Kazantzidis, Marinella, Poly Panou and Viki Moscholiou performed here. In 2004 venues for the Olympic Games were built again in Kallithea .

Infrastructure

There are two universities in Kallithea, Harokopio and Panteion University, as well as numerous cultural organizations and sports clubs, such as Kallithea FC , which uses the Grigoris Lambrakis Stadium , or Esperos.

Kallithea is connected to the Athens metro network with the stations Kallithea and Tavros . There are also a number of tram, bus and trolley bus lines. The city can be reached by car via Syngrou-Allee, Poseidonos-Allee, Kifissos-Allee and Thisseos-Allee.

Attractions

In addition to Agia Eleousa , a church from late Byzantine times, the focus is on the Faliro Olympic complex on Kallithea Beach, which ranges from the Faliro sports pavilion to the Olympic beach volleyball center and the Ilisos estuary. The Kallithea Monument , a family grave from the 4th century BC, comes from Kallithea . BC, which is now exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus.

A monument in the center of the town on Davaki Square shows the origin of the local Black Sea Greeks.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center started operations in 2016 . It houses the Greek National Library and the National Opera of Greece.
