Athens tram plan (as of 2019)

The standard gauge Athens tram ( Greek Τραμ ), which also serves the neighboring city of Paleo Faliro , is operated by Tram SA and is a subsidiary of Attiko Metro, which also operates the lines of the Athens Metro . In July 2004, regular tram operation began on three lines. The tram complements the older Athens / Piraeus trolleybus .

precursor

The old Athens tram on Omonia Square , on the left a car of the canceled line 6

From 1882 there was a horse-drawn tram in Athens , which was replaced by the electric tram from 1908. The Athens tram network reached its greatest extent in 1936 with the commissioning of the coastal tram to Perama. After the Second World War, the network was shut down in stages until 1960. Only the line to Perama, which was operated by another operator (the electric railway company ISAP), was operated until 1977.

The facilities were taken over by the electric railway ISAP (today Metro Line 1), which also used some work cars on its network. The staff was also taken over by this, provided it did not go into early retirement. Some historical vehicles were taken over from the museum of the OSE , which restored two cars (another car was later returned to the newly founded tram company and is exhibited at a station).

Athens suffered from acute traffic congestion in the late 1980s, which manifested itself in frequent smog and later driving bans. There were fierce debates as to whether one should expand the subway (then only one line) or reintroduce the tram. In the end, a combined solution was implemented with two separate networks that are operated under one roof.

Route network

The system has a T-shaped network. Currently (2016) there are three lines, with one line commuting between two of the three terminal stops of the network. The northern end of two of these lines is the central Syntagma Square . There is a possibility to change to the underground. More are at the Syngrou-Fix and SEF ( Stadio Irinis kai Philias ) stops , the latter to the Faliro metro station. SEF is also the previous second end point of the tram network in the southwest. The third terminus, Asklipio Voulas, is in the coastal suburb of Voula, in the southeast of the Athens metropolitan area.

future

Phases 1 and 2

Tram SA planned to expand the route network to Piraeus by 2010 (phase 1). Two more lines through downtown Piraeus should follow by 2013 (phase 2). This should open up the port and the notoriously congested city center of Piraeus. Up to the present point in time (2018), however, phase 1 has not been implemented.

Phases 3 and 4

There were other projects that were being planned and examined. In phase 3, the route network was to be expanded from the port of Piraeus to the north to the district of Kaminia and to the west to the neighboring municipality of Keratsini with the Athens industrial ports. In phase 4, the old coastal tram to Perama should roll again from there.

Historic and modern tram, Kasomouli station

35 Sirio trams from AnsaldoBreda , designed by the Italian designer Pininfarina , are used. The depot is located on the site of the former Hellenikon Airport . A historic tram from the former Athens tram company, also made in Italy, has been restored and placed at the Kasomouli tram stop as a souvenir. Another historic tram is in the Athens Railway Museum .
