Marousi ( Greek Μαρούσι ( n. Sg. ), On the official level also under the older name Amarousio [n] Αμαρούσιο [ν]) is a Greek city in northern Attica and a suburb of Athens .
location
Marousi is located 12.5 km northwest of Athens city center. It borders Chalandri to the south and noble Kifisia to the north . The development of these suburbs in Athens merges into one another.
history
In ancient times, the Demos Athmonon was located on the site of today's Marousi. Viticulture flourished in the fertile region in ancient times. The current name is reminiscent of a sanctuary of Artemis Amarysia , who was venerated in Amarynthos on Euboea .
As one of the largest of the suburbs of Athens and one of the first to have an S-Bahn connection, the city developed into a center primarily for administrative offices and pharmaceutical companies. The importance of Marousi for retail, however, has steadily declined in favor of new shopping centers and large supermarkets.
Marousi entered the literature through Henry Miller's Greek novel The Colossus of Maroussi.
