The community Kesariani ( Greek Καισαριανή ( f. Sg. ), Also transcribed Kessariani or Kaisariani ) is a suburb in the east of the Greek capital Athens .
location
Kesariani is about 7 km east of the Acropolis , 4 km southwest of Katechaki Boulevard, 4 km from Hymettos Ring , which is part of Attiki Odos , and 6 km south of Kifissias Boulevard. The community is accessed through the Olof Palme Boulevard. Kesariani borders on Zografos to the north, Athens to the west, Koropi to the east, Vyronas to the south and Peania to the southeast .

Ano Kesariani
The area used to be used for agriculture, including growing vegetables and pasture, and was forested. In the middle of the 20th century urban housing displaced agriculture. Open spaces remained in the southeast; to the east is the wooded mountain Hymettos ; through a valley a road leads to Athens' telecommunications tower. The University of Athens is located in the northeast of the municipality, mainly in Zografos . A hill rises in the center of the municipality, in the east the area at Hymettos is rocky and wooded. Of the 85 km municipal area, 75 km are mountain and forest.
The Kesariani monastery is in the east on the Hymettos.
history
The community was founded in 1922 as a refugee camp for displaced people from Asia Minor, most of whom were from Smyrna . In 1934, Kesariani, until then a district of Athens , was elevated to an independent municipality.
At the shooting range of Kesariani about 600 people were soldiers in the period from 1942 to 1944 Wehrmacht shot.

Sports
The basketball club Near East Kesariani ( Greek Νήαρ Ήστ ), founded in 1927, plays in the second Greek division. The team plays at the Kaisariani Stadium . The football club Ethnikos Asteras Kesariani has been playing in the second division again after a few years in the first division since 2002.
