Zografos ( Greek Ζωγράφος ( m. Sg. ), Also Zographos ) is a suburb in the east of the Greek capital Athens .

location

Zografos is located in the east of Athens, about 5 km from the Acropolis . The Ymittos range of hills lies further to the east, and the Ilisos river flows west of the municipality . It borders the city of Athens to the west, Cholargos-Papagos to the north, Kesariani to the south and Peania to the east .

The municipality includes the districts of Goudi, Paleo Zografou, Neo Zografou and Ano Ilisia.

history

The present-day districts of Ano Ilisia, Goudi and Zografos were previously called Kouponia, probably after the distribution of the properties on the Ymittos ; In 1793 each ottoman received six lots (pieces of land).

Therapontos Church in Zografos

The area was originally used for growing vegetables and viticulture and was partially forested. Ioannis Zografos (* 1844 in Kalavryta), after whom the community got its name, was a university professor of economics. In 1902 he divided a piece of land he had acquired into small pieces of land, which he began to sell after the First World War. The result was a settlement that in 1929 formed the rural community of Zografou with around 100 houses. Ioannis Zografos only kept a piece of land at the junction of today's Boulevard Papagou and Zografou. Ioannis Zografos had five sons: Konstantinos, Georgios, Nikolaos (called "Nick the Greek"), Spyridon and Sotiris (who later became the first mayor of Zografos), and three daughters, Pavlina, Zinovia and Maria.

In 1930 Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos founded the first elementary school, the Zographio, in the same place where the elementary schools are today opposite the church of Agios Theraponta. One of the classrooms also served as an office for the newly established rural community of Zografos. The gradually growing settlement included adjacent areas. Handsome villas were built, some of which are still preserved today, such as Villa Kostas Zografos, now a kindergarten, Villa Bonaparte, which today houses the community's family advisory center, and Villa Gounaropoulos, today a museum.

In 1948 Zografos was raised to the parish.

The Athens Technical University campus is part of the municipality .
