history
Glyfada is on the territory of the ancient Athenian demos Aixone (the phyle Kekropis ), whose inhabitants were notorious for their contentiousness. The theater of Aixone can be seen in the garden of Villa Kanellopoulos in neighboring Voula.
Meaning and character
Glyfada is not only the largest of the southern Athens suburbs. Because of its preferred location by the sea, its elegant cafes, restaurants and clubs, it occupies a top position among the sought-after residential areas in the Athens area and is considered a place of the “beautiful and rich”, celebrities from music and entertainment, sports and the media.
A US air force base was connected to the neighboring former airport, which early on led to a certain Americanization of Glyfada. Today Glyfada still has a Greek-American atmosphere characterized by prosperity and consumerism, which is reflected in the type of shops and restaurants and their range of products. The lively shopping center offers a variety of boutiques, designer shops and other shops for fashion and luxury goods of all kinds and all well-known brands.
Glyfada has villa-like residences with sea views that are among Europe's richest and most lavish. With its gardens and beaches, a scene of beach clubs and a modern marina, it forms a capital of the "Attic Riviera".
Points of attraction
The town hall is located in the center of the city. Nearby, elegant shops are concentrated on Posidonos and Pandora Boulevards, Kypros, Labraki and Metaxa Streets, while larger corporate offices and other shops are located on Voyliagmenis, Goynari and Gennimata Boulevards.
To the northwest is the wooded golf course of the Glyfada Golf Club.
There is a sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation center on the embankment , operated by ARCHELON, the Society for the Protection of Sea Turtles in Greece.
The Glyfada Marina has four basins with a length of 130 to 300 meters with all port facilities.
