Metamorfosi ( Greek Μεταμόρφωση ( f. Sg. ), Until 1957 Koukouvaounes Κουκουβάουνες ( f. Pl. )) Is a municipality in the north of the Greek capital Athens .

geography

Metamorfosi is located around nine kilometers north of Athens city center at an average height of 170  m on the left, eastern bank of the Kifisos , which marks the border with neighboring Acharnes , behind which the Parnitha rises around 5 kilometers north . The area is completely built up except for a narrow strip along the river and is part of the closed urban space of the capital. The other neighboring municipalities are (starting in the north, clockwise) Kifisia , Lykovrysi-Pefki , Iraklio , Nea Ionia and Filadelfia-Chalkidona .

Metamorfosi is divided into the districts of Agios Konstandinos (Άγιος Κωνσταντίνος), Longos (Λόγγος), Koprisia (Κοπρίσια), Center (Κέντρο), Agia Varvara-Kanapλς, Agia Varvara-Kanapλς, Agia Varvara-Kanapας, γΗas (παρλς), Agia Varvara-Kanapαίς (ήγas -αρασς αταταστήαστατασταστασταφoi ή -αραρς γΗas (π -αραρς ταήασταφoias (παρλς) (Νέα Ζωή-Μποφίλια).

history

In the area of Metamorfosi the location of the ancient Attic Demos Sypalēttos (Συπαληττός) is located. The area is on an old road that led north from Athens to Dekeleia and the course of which is the modern main road that follows Odos Tatoiou .

On the north side of the vestibule of today's Agii Theodori cemetery chapel , a building from the post-Byzantine period (15th / 16th century), there is an arcosolium that verifiably dates back to the Middle Byzantine period and which makes the place identifiable with a monastery sancti Theodori , which in a document from Pope Innocent III. is mentioned. The small chapel of Agia Anna am Kifisos was built at the end of the 16th century, with spolia from the Middle Byzantine period being built into the masonry. These oldest testimonies outside the historical center give evidence of settlement before the time of the Duchy of Athens .

The actual place Koukouvaounes has only been documented in modern times. It was an Arvanite settlement until the 20th century , the Albanian name of which has been passed down as Fouvaia (Φουβάια, also Fuvaje, Fuvajat ).

In the German translation by Jacob Spons Voyage d'Italie, de Dalmatie, de Grèce et du Levant, fait aux années 1675 et 1676 , the village “near Athens / between the olive trees” is mentioned as Cacovaones , early 19th century reported English travelers of Koukoubages or Koukouvaounes, whereby the word origin from Greek koukouvagia κουκουβάγια 'owl' was noted and 30 houses were counted. (Even today, the owl is the 'heraldic animal' of the community.)

Koukouvaounes initially belonged to the municipality of Acharnes from 1833 and was added to the growing municipality of Athens in 1912. The population of the village increased from 515 to 815 between 1879 and 1907. The town was little affected by the effects of the population exchange between Greece and Turkey : the Greek census of 1928 registered only 39 refugees from Turkey out of 1204 inhabitants. The main growth of the municipality took place with the urbanization of the Athens plain in the 1950s and 1960s: Between 1951 and 1971 the population rose from 2807 to 16,880 inhabitants. In 1933, Koukouvaounes became independent as a rural municipality and in 1972 was upgraded to a municipal municipality as Metamorfosi.

In 1933 the post-Byzantine old church of the Transfiguration of the Lord (Gr. Naos tis Metamorfoseos tou Sotiros ) in Koukouvaounes was replaced by a larger new building. After this patronage, the parish received its official name in 1957. In 1985, the construction of a historicizing new church began 80 meters away, which was ceremoniously consecrated in December 2010.

The municipality, which in the 20th century also attracted day-trippers as a rural suburb of Athens, is now a modern city with lots of green, but no actual city center.

Economy and Infrastructure

Metamorfosi has an industrial area in the north where many Greek companies, mainly from the building materials industry, are based. In addition, one of the three sewage treatment plants of ESYAP ( Water Supply and Wastewater Company of the Capital , Εταιρεία Ύδρευσης και Αποχέτευσης Πρωτεύουσαos - ΕΣΥΑΠ), which directs the treated sewage into the water, has been located here on the northern border of the municipality since 1980 . The yoghurt producer Fage has had its main plant on the premises since 1975. Novartis Greece has its headquarters in Metamorfosi.

The Greek A1 and National Road 1 , which are crossed by the Athens ring road in the south of the municipality, run parallel through Metamorfosi in a north-south direction . An unnumbered national road to Tatoi branches off the national road to the north . There is no connection to public rail transport, stations of the Athens underground and S-Bahn lines are each around one kilometer from the center. There is a connection through buses. The Athens airport (30 km away) and the port of Piraeus (20 km) can be reached directly via the highways.
