Spetses ( Greek Σπέτσες ( f. Pl. )) Is a Greek island south of the Argolis peninsula in the Argolic Gulf and part of the Saronic Islands . Together with the uninhabited island of Velopoula and the privately owned small island of Spetsopoula , it forms the municipality (δήμος dímos ) Spetses in the Attic regional district of Islands .
The name Spetses comes from the time of the Venetian rule between the 13th and 15th centuries; at that time the island was called "Isola delle Spezie", "Island of Spices". In ancient times the island was called Pityoussa .
The highest point is the Profitis Ilias with a height of 248 meters.
In the Greek struggle for freedom against the Turks in 1821 and 1822, the island's ships played a decisive role in the fight against the Turkish fleet.
A symbol of the island, namely that of the captain Laskarina Bouboulina (1771–1825), also dates from this period ; ( Nikos Kazantzakis used her name in the novel Alexis Sorbas as a nickname ). She is a heroic figure from the Greek war of liberation; a small museum has been set up in their 300-year-old house.
